Unfold Bio Sites: A Free Link in Bio Tool by Squarespace

If you’ve come across Bio Site while researching website builders or link-in-bio tools, you might be wondering about this platform that seems to be both.

Bio Site is a feature within Unfold, an app developed by Squarespace. You can do a lot more with Unfold—like plan your Instagram feed and design social media templates—but this post focuses on the Bio Site tool.

Specifically, we're going to look at what it offers as a micro site builder for creatives who need something more robust than a social media profile, but leaner than a traditional website.

What is a link in bio site?

A link in bio site gives you a single URL to put in your bio and gives your followers access to a centralized list to navigate from.

Think of it as a mini mobile-friendly landing page. You can share multiple relevant links to key destinations for your brand. It’s handy on social media platforms like Instagram, which don’t allow clickable links in post captions.

This can feel very limiting if you’re trying to make it easy for your followers to get to certain key URLs as you build your audience. When you have multiple pages you want to direct people to—a website, blog, new product page, Patreon, other social media accounts, affiliates, etc.—how do you pick which one to use?

What is Unfold by Squarespace?

Unfold is a link-in-bio and storytelling tool developed by Squarespace. Originally launched an app for creating social media templates, Unfold has since evolved into a bio site builder.

Unlike third-party tools like Linktree or Lnk.Bio, Unfold is tightly integrated into the Squarespace ecosystem. This makes it appealing for people who already use Squarespace for their website or portfolio. You can build a minimalist bio page, customize the design with modern fonts and layouts, and track some basic analytics all from your phone or desktop.

Bio Site Features Worth Considering

Highlights:

  • Unfold offers a free tier that covers the essentials for setting up a clean, functional bio site with no credit card information required. You can add unlimited links, upload a profile image, and choose a template that works well on both mobile and desktop.

  • If you want to sell products or offer digital downloads, Bio Site has that capability even in the free version.

  • With the simple and intuitive user interface, you can set up a professional-looking micro site in as little as 30 minutes.

  • While you do need a Squarespace account to make a Bio Site with Unfold, you don’t need a Squarespace website.

More Good Features:

  • Even in the free version, you’re not limited to creating only one Bio Site. You get 10. This is great for multi-disciplinary creatives who have separate social media accounts for different brands/creative identities.

  • You can embed an email signup field directly into your Bio Site, giving you a convenient way to build an email list.

  • You can create a micro site that’s more than a simple list of links (like with Linktree) by embedding photos, videos, audio, and more.

  • You can connect your Bio Site directly to other platforms, including Patreon and Twitch.

  • Bio Site templates have the same bold, clean aesthetic as Squarespace sites with enough customizable elements to make it truly your own.

    • Custom visual elements include a profile image or logo, optional cover image, and background color. You can also choose from several different fonts and pre-packaged font combinations.

  • Unfold takes a mobile-first approach to site design, so you’re guaranteed to have a micro site that works especially well for users on mobile devices.

  • You can use Bio Site to make a micro/link-in-bio version of a site built with any platform, not just Squarespace.

  • There are no ads or branding from Unfold cluttering your Bio Site, besides a minimal “build your own” prompt.

Built-In Integration with Squarespace

One of Unfold’s biggest advantages is that it’s built and maintained by Squarespace, which makes integration with their website platform smoother than with third-party tools like Linktree or Beacons. If you’re already using Squarespace for your website, blog, or portfolio, Unfold makes it incredibly easy to:

  • Pull in your Squarespace site link as a default option and style it consistently.

  • Maintain visual consistency across platforms; Unfold uses similar fonts, clean layouts, and design logic that matches Squarespace’s aesthetic.

  • Access Unfold from your existing Squarespace account, so there’s no need to manage a separate login.

  • No separate Squarespace billing needed if you use Unfold via Bio Sites/a Squarespace account, unlike standalone third-party tools.

    • If you publish a Bio Site through Unfold and link it to your Squarespace account, your billing for advanced features can be managed through Squarespace. That means no extra invoices or separate billing tools to juggle. That said, if you subscribe to Unfold Pro via the app, that’s still handled through your app store of choice.

It’s not a deep integration, however. You can’t pull blog posts or product listings into Unfold as of 2025. But it’s still a smoother experience than juggling two separate ecosystems. If you care about brand cohesion or just want fewer moving parts, that’s a definite plus.

Limitations of Bio Sites using Unfold

  • While you can create a custom color palette with your brand colors, that feature is only available on a paid plan.

  • Despite the versatility of Bio Site templates, they’re not as customizable as what you can create with Carrd or Beacons.

  • The minimalist approach that comes with a tool developed by Squarespace may not offer enough flexibility or integrations for everyone.

  • The analytics dashboard only gives you bare minimum data: views and clicks.

  • You don’t get your own domain. The URL for you bio site looks like “bio.site/[name].”

Unfold Bio Sites for Creatives

For a lot of creatives, especially those just starting out, you don’t really need a full website. A Bio Site is a minimalist alternative if a simple landing page suits your needs better. You still have plenty of space to tell people a little about yourself and link out to key content, like your portfolio, a polished work sample, or published works.

And you can put it in more places than just your social media profiles:

  • Link it to a QR code on business cards, resumes, and any print materials you have

  • Add it to your email signature
